Martine Lemieux’s artistic expression, first manifested through fashion design, has evolved into the manipulation of textiles and materials, bringing her to interpret familiar objects surrounding us. Apparel is studied in a two-dimensional form, diverted from its primary function and transformed into works that become interrogations on fashion and the symbolism of clothing.
Apparel is both the medium and a source of inspiration; elected for its color and texture, it becomes timeless in the face of fashion. Materials combine to stage a social choreography, a human dance. Topstitches underline the inevitability of attachment while monochromes convey an ideal of harmony and integrity.
The work of Martine Lemieux invites reflection on our society. It arises from our overconsumption, which supplies her with raw material. In a culture where fashion changes at an ever-increasing pace, we are constantly shopping for the latest trends in a bid to renew our identity. In the words of Barbara Kruger, “I shop, therefore I am.”
